Xtreme-Angling Guide Service hit the waters of the California Delta the week of Feb. 16-21st targeting sturgeon with excellent success.
We fished the Rio Vista area of the Sac River once again. Water temp was 56 degrees with stained water clarity. We marked a lot of sturgeon moving through the fishing grounds which resulted in 5 keepers landed for 6 clients.
We were fishing in 19-23 foot of water and using Bloody Lamprey eel for bait. Fish were hooked on both the incoming and outgoing tides. I use Penn Fathom 15LD reels spooled up with 50lb Xtreme Braid and my leader is made up of 60lb monofilament.
We also had several opportunities on additional sturgeon which resulted in broken hooksets and a broken line on a big fish peeling drag (most likely cut by the fishes skates) .
The fishing should remain strong Through the end of March then the Spring Striper season should begin. The water clarity is stained and if it stays that way the striper trolling bite should be fantastic!
If your interested in getting a sturgeon give me a call and let’s a get trip date selected. In April I will be targeting both striper trolling trips in the Delta and using jumbo minnows north of Sacramento.
